Grapples - Grape Flavored Apples

grapples
Grapples are apples that have been soaked in grape juice extract. Pronounced, "Grape-L", they're a patented process owned by Grapple Fruits, LLC of Wenatchee, WA.

They specifically use Washington Extra Fancy Fuji Apples, because they absorb the grape flavor best. They simply soak the apples in concentrated grape flavor and pure water. All ingredients are USDA and FDA approved and the process has been licensed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

The apple takes on no additional sugars or calories, and are not genetically altered in any way.

It's largely designed as a way to get kids to eat more apples, because apples just don't taste good enough I suppose. Grapples have been around for a couple of years now, but are only now making their way into grocery stores across the country.

Jordan Matter's Uncovered: Celebrating Women in New York City:

062_museum_of_sex
Jordan Matter's great gallery of regular New York Women topless in public. (click the pic)

from his statement: "A woman's right to appear topless in public was legalized in New York in 1992. Since New York is the only state with such a law, forty-nine out of fifty states deem it illegal for a woman to remove her shirt in public. However, men are free to take off their shirts with impunity. Challenging this inequity between the sexes is the purpose of my work. There has been a recent shift in America towards a socially conservative philosophy, so right after Janet Jackson's breast was exposed at the Super Bowl, I started asking women to appear topless in New York City. I wanted to document what the Federal Communications Commission called "great outrage among the American people" over a bare breast. But soon I realized there was very little outrage. Of the thousands of people who saw the women topless, most reacted with enthusiasm, humor, and encouragement." Read More...

Personal Blimp

first_flight_2

Why bother with commercial blimp travel when you can fly your own personal blimp? On October 27th, the Airship Alberto made its maiden voyage. The personal blimp, which uses hot air, has been in development by Skyacht Aircraft since early 2002. The company’s goal is to build a silent, steerable and affordable air vehicle.

The Personal Blimp website shows the evolution of the project, and describes the aircraft, “The Personal Blimp uses hot air (rather than Helium) for lift and virtually silent electric motors for propulsion. To put it another way: the Personal Blimp is a hot air balloon that can be maneuvered about in nearly perfect quiet. Passengers in a Personal Blimp have a serene experience of flight unavailable in any other type of aircraft. (Note: Initial flight tests are using a conventional gas-powered motor. Electric motors will be added once these initial tests are complete. Similarly, the initial flight tests are being made with conventional—i.e. loud—hot air balloon burners. Quiet burners will be added later.) Read More...

it may not always be so - a poem by ee cummings

it may not always be so

it may not always be so; and i say
that if your lips, which i have loved, should touch
another's, and your dear strong fingers clutch
his heart, as mine in time not far away;
if on another's face your sweet hair lay
in such a silence as i know, or such
great writhing words as, uttering overmuch,
stand helplessly before the spirit at bay;

if this should be, i say if this should be --
you of my heart, send me a little word;
that i may go unto him, and take his hands,
saying, Accept all happiness from me.
Then shall i turn my face, and hear one bird
sing terribly afar in the lost lands.

Biojewellry - Designing Rings with Bioengineered Bone Tissue

group
This i exactly what it says it is... a science project by design students that is creating jewellry made from bone cells harvested from you... the doaner and then grown in a petrie dish until the piece is finished

Focussing on advances in tissue engineering, our project began with an investigation of implantable technologies: we discovered that scientists were not only using metals and bioplastics to repair damaged bone tissue but developing a method of growing actual bone outside the body to transplant into patients. Our intention was to create an object that would allow these technologies to be considered in relation to a familiar experience. Could design be used to construct an open-ended and provocative statement, in contrast to narratives found in the media which focused on threatening or fantastic representations of the technology?

We were fortunate to strike up a partnership with Dr Ian Thompson, who worked in the Department of Materials at Imperial College. Headed by Professor Larry Hench, the department developed the first generation of bioceramic material in 1969. With their support we were able to start thinking about a collaborative, public communication project.

By situating bone tissue engineering within the framework of a relationship between two people, the Biojewellery project aims to create public dialogue with emphasis on communication and the accessibility of the scientific processes involved.

We aim to document the couple, using interviews to give an impression of their motives, create time-lapse film of the donated cells as the tissue develops and record the making of the rings in the studio. By showing bioengineering processes in this way we hope to encourage ethical debate, and raise critical, constructive questions over how advancements in science relate to our identities and desires.

Flickr Leech - browse Flickr faster

flickrleech
It seems like the "web 2.0" sites that are making the most waves these days are the ones that have the foresight and openness to release an API and allow users to mash up their content. Google Maps is a good example of this. Although Flickr doesn't really need any help from users to bring it to the forefront of people's minds, they've still released an API. That API lets people do interesting things with their data, and one of those interesting things is Flickr Leech.
Flickr Leech allows you to choose between Interestingness (by date), By Username, By User ID, Favorites, By Photoset, Group Pool, and Search, and returns a massive set of thumbnails to allow you to very quickly browse your results. Clicking on any thumbnail opens that image's Flickr page in a new background tab or window, allowing you to continue browsing, then view all of the images you selected once they've already loaded. Slick. Probably my favorite part of Flickr Leech is the snarky messages you get on each search - fun stuff. Read More...

Floating (on air) Bed

floatingbed
Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssennaar’s floating bed defies gravity. Kept in a permanent state of suspension by magnets built into both the bed and the floor, it doesn't require any other form of energy to keep it afloat, and according to the designer, it can hold the weight of a sumo wrestling team!

Questioning the ways in which gravity determines the image of architecture, Ruijssennaar wanted to design a product that used something other than gravity as its dictating force."In contrast to conventional furniture which falls towards the earth, Floating Bed falls towards the sky." Read More...

Rainbow Technology, data storage on paper (no, really)

paper18_
A Kerala student has developed a technique for portable data whereby the data can now be stored on ordinary paper. And to boot, larger amounts of data can be had on lesser space. Named “Rainbow Technology”, the new technique is the brainchild of Sainul Abideen, who has just finished his MCA at Muslim Educational Society Engineering College in Kuttipuram in Kerala’s Malappuram district.

The extremely low-cost technology will drastically reduce the cost of storage and provide for high-speed storage as well. Files in any format such as movie files, songs, images and text can be stored using this technology.

Currently, of the several options available for data storage, DVDs are the best mode. But a high quality DVD, which is very expensive can store only about 4.7 gigabyte (GB) of data. In contrast, the Rainbow Versatile Disc (RVD) can store 90 to 450 GB. And Sainul has simultaneously developed a scanning drive based on his Rainbow software which will come in smaller sizes to be initially carried with the laptops and later to fit into their bodies.

Sainul, who has just turned 24, says that instead of using zeroes and ones for computing, he used geometric shapes such as circles, squares and triangles for computing which combine with various colors and preserve the data in images. An RVD therefore looks like a printout of modern art. Click the pic for full article.

drop spots - secret santa in the wild?

Picture 1
I somehow missed this cultural phenomenon... or maybe it's just starting. I used to write notes and them in library books or hide messages in the stacks of scrap paper at the card catalog so some random person would find my message. This idea is similar except you exchange random surprises on the sly.

A dropspot is a kind of alternative mailbox. It’s a hiding place in a public space, where people can leave things for exchange. Anything. It’s a wierd and wonderful way to add personal character to the streets that we live in. Stash something fun and see what you get back.

To find a Drop Spot in your neighborhood, visit the Drop Spots map. Select a Drop Spot map marker near you, make note of its location and visual description and head out the door to find it! Once you locate the spot and discover your mystery gift, make sure to leave one in its place to keep the exchange going. For gift tips and ideas visit the FAQ page.

To create a new Drop Spot, find a hidden nook or crevice in your neighborhood to tuck away a simple gift you would like to share; perhaps a poem, photograph, favorite quote, or mix CD—something fun that represents you. Then log on to dropspots.org to map and describe the secret location of your gift so others can find it.

treehouse workshop - treehouses for big kids

Fargo ext.3WEB
Treehouse Workshop is a Washington State company that builds cottages in trees, interestingly... most of them are used as "extra rooms" or cabins.

from the site:

Does TreeHouse Workshop build TreeHouses suitable for living in?

Generally we don't do this, for a number of reasons. First, a lot of people looking to do this are trying to create a more economical living space than building a ground based house. However, to fit a tree based structure with plumbing and the associated equipment is quite complex, requiring considerable support and design considerations. This extra load is what causes the overall cost to rise beyond the suggested budget.

Permits are usually required for structures with plumbing because they can be seen as a permanent living residence. There may also be concern about the structural safety of the house so an engineer may have to prepare a report on the plans.

We are currently in the design phase for a fully equiped TreeHouse that will be plumbed and have electricity. It gains extra support with the use of 'artificial trees' crafted from steel and concrete and molded to look like real wood. Read More...

Setting up security is a little more complicated, but if I can do it... you can do it. Click the pic to visit the site. Read More...
